Rental Center at The Home Depot

I recently had a chance to compare the Elston store in Chicago with the one on North Ave. At least as far as the tool rental department they are night and day. The individual on the phone at Elston when I called mumbled and wasn't helpful at all. The staff at North Ave. was helpful on the phone and then pleasant and even sympathetic to my situation when I visited the store in person. The staff at the North Ave. store provided advice and checked all of the equipment thoroughly before it went out. I was impressed and they exceeded my expectations. I'm not always impressed with the service at Home Depot overall but in the case of the North Ave. store my experience has been nothing but consistently good. I'm guessing that the North Ave. store has a strong store manager and that's the difference.

I rented a truck from here specifically because I needed something with a ramp. I was told the ramp was functioning and all was well with the truck, so I rented and went on my way. However, when I got to my house to load my (very heavy) copper kettle drums, I discovered the ramp would not come out of the truck. It was locked in, and nothing I could do would get the ramp out. I called Home Depot, and he told me all he could do was suggest I bring the truck back, and they try to figure it out. This was not an option for me though because I had a gig to get to ASAP. This put me in a horrible position, and I VERY luckily found someone to help me manually lift the drums into the truck, but I quite literally almost lost the entire gig because of Home Depot's negligence. I was offered no compensation or discounted rate for this horrible experience. When I returned the truck, the worker also tried to get the ramp out to no avail. It was obviously broken/stuck. I was still offered no compensation or apology of any kind. So disappointing.

Waiting 30 minutes in tool rental to rent a truck. 2 people ahead of me and one overworked person helping. 3 managers come in and tell poor employee that she needs to get someone over to help. They don't offer to find someone or to jump in and help themselves. Typical of my experiences here. Really don't like home depot. Just is too convenient to stop coming back.

called the number for the Rental dept. on their web page to ask about a specific tool. I was transferred a total seven times and never actually reached them. Finally after 20 minutes the customer service desk said they didn't have what I needed. The kind of bloated incompetence I've come to expect from Home Despot.
